A long-time player on the residential home security market, Vivant has cultivated a strong reputation for designing and implementing their own home security technology in all of their products, something which almost none of their competitors can claim as well.

However, while the company is known for the quality of their home security equipment and their commitment to home automation, they have long had a reputation for poor customer service and aggressive sales tactics. While this has improved in recent years, there is certainly still room for improvement.

Summary

Vivint is the leader designing and manufacturing their own home security equipment, something that no other home security company can claim. Their commitment to designing their components' in-house gives the company an unparalleled ability to offer customization options to their customers, and allows the company to offer more home automation options that nearly any other home security company.

In addition, Vivint has developed a reputation for offer their customers flexible payment options, so that customers can either pay their full set-up and equipment fees upfront, or can spread out payments on these fees over the length of the service contract. This is an excellent option for customers who are on a budget and do not have the $100 to $500 in upfront costs that many companies charge.

Packages

Unlike many of their competitors, Vivint Alarm does not offer a gluttony of security package options. Instead, the company offers two basic options for all homeowners: the Home Security package and Home Automation Package.

Home Security

The Home Security package, priced at $39.99 a month, comes with their basic home security kit, free installation, remote access to your video monitoring system via your cell phone, and access to the company's wide array of home automation equipment a la carte.

Home Automation

The Home Automation package, on the other hand, is priced at $49.99 a month and comes with all of the features found on the Home Security package, plus the ability to control your home's doors, windows, alarm system, thermostat, and even small appliances from your cell phone.

Installation

One of the benefits associated with working with Vivint for your home security needs is the fact that the company offers professional installation services for all of their customers, and as of 2017 the company no longer charges for installation at all. The only exception to this policy is an outdoor camera, which the company does charge $99 to install. It is important to note that Vivint's installation representatives have developed a reputation for aggressive attempts to upsell their customers, since these individuals are paid on commission and have an incentive to increase the size of your equipment purchase.

Key Features

One of Vivint's most unique features is the company's willingness to offer flexible contract payment options, a rarity in the home security field. While the company's monthly fees are more expensive than most of their competitors prices, Vivint allows their customers to either pay for all of their equipment up front, or to finance the price of the equipment over the course of their contract length. This option is especially useful for customers on a budget, as up front costs for monitored home security systems can often exceed $500.

However, while Vivint's flexible payment options are certainly attractive, it is important to note that the company's contracts are limited to 42 and 60-month options, a very long commitment for your average homeowner.

Another area where Vivint really shines is in their equipment. Unlike most home security companies, Vivint actually designs and manufacturers most of their components in-house, giving them a level of control of their equipment design and performance that you simply cannot find anywhere else. The company has been particularly praised for their home automation capabilities, which are among the most extensive of any home security company out there. Despite their proprietary designs, the company's equipment still works fine with Amazon Echo and Nest Learning.

Vivint also offers a plethora of equipment and security plan options for their customers, including an extensive array of home automation features. The company's basic security package comes with a touch screen control panel, motion detector, key fob, and door sensors. Customers also have the option of adding advanced equipment to their security package, including glass break detectors, recessed door sensors, small appliance controls, and even panic pendants, meaning that they have an option for nearly any security need out there.

Vivint is also one of the only true nationwide home security companies out there, with service options in all 50 states. This widespread service, combined with their easy relocation policy, makes this an excellent option for those who relocate frequently.

Lastly, the company also a strong reputation for their Vivint Sky smartphone app, which is available on both Apple and Android products. This app provides customers with the ability to arm and disarm their systems, manage their video feed, lock doors, and even control their home's thermostat with ease from their phone.

Experience with VIVINT

While Vivint has had a difficult time overcoming their past reputation for poor customer service, the company has made incredible strides in making their interactions with customers a much more pleasant experience. However, the company still does have room for improvement, with customers reporting difficulty troubleshooting problems, addressing account issues, and canceling their service.

However, we have found that Vivint really shines when it comes to the quality and performance of their equipment. They are simply the best company in the country when it comes to designing and installing top-of-the-line, custom built home security equipment. This alone makes the company a compelling option for any homeowner.

Great products and overall experience but it comes at a higher than average price. The entire package comes in a user-friendly packaging and you definitely feel like you are getting a superior product. However, the monthly price is sometimes what you would pay for another company or a different setup. Also, you are entered into a long contract, minimum 42 months. The fees do add up for installation and pieces of hardware if you don't get them waived.
