The emergence of wireless home security technol
When it comes to Do-It-Yourself home security, Protect America is one of the biggest names in the business, and have been ranked the top home security provider in a number of surveys and consumer reports. Offering a wide range of plans, they have been sure to design alarm packages to cover just about every type of homeowner. Their competitive pricing, no equipment/installation costs, and wide variety of pricing packages make them a very attractive choice, but when it comes to protecting your home you should know the finer details of the product you're purchasing.
Protect America is what's known as a DIY home security system. This means that there is no professional set up, or particular expertise required in order to protect your home from break-ins and other emergencies. The Protect America system has been specifically engineered so that just about anyone can do it with no special skills or tools. After you order, they send you all the materials, instructions for installation, and they offer additional support if you have any questions via phone, live chat, or email.
The Protect America system is particularly known for having no equipment or setup fees, which means you can get up and running with no upfront cost outside of your monthly payment. With plans starting as low as $19.99, Protect America is a perfect home security system for someone on a budget.
Even while offering such low cost plans and no equipment costs, Protect America systems spare no features and every system is on the cutting edge of home security technology. For example, these DIY systems are based on wireless technologies that allow almost a completely wireless system. Aside from a main control panel's electrical cord (and broadband/landline connection if not using cellular monitoring), everything is integrated completely wirelessly.
The copper package from Protect America comes with the Simon XT control panel, 3 door or window sensors, 1 motion detector, 3 window decals, and a yard sign. The basic price of $19.99 includes landline monitoring, which has the downside that someone could cut the line and disable the system. Broadband or cellular monitoring options are available at a higher rate (both option are $41.99) and come with the SMART system that allows you to operate your system from your smartphone.
The bronze package has 3 extra door or window sensors, making a total of 6 sensors. Just like the copper package, it includes 1 motion sensor, the window decals, and the yard sign. The price for the landline monitoring is $35.99 a month, and both broadband and cellular monitoring are priced at $47.99.
There are a total of 9 door or window sensors included in the silver package, and no other differences in equipment compared to the two cheaper packages. The landline monitoring costs $37.99 a month, with broadband and cellular monitoring for $49.99 a month.
The gold package has 11 door or window sensors and is recommended by Protect America for bigger homes. For landline monitoring, this package costs $39.99 a month. Cellular or broadband monitoring will cost you $51.99 a month.
Finally, the platinum package comes with an additional 3 sensors, bringing the total to 14 door or window sensors. Their most extensive package is $42.99 for the landline option, and $54.99 for the cellular or broadband monitoring option.
Upon opening your Protect America home security package you will find:
1x Main Control Panel
3x Door/Window Sensors
2x Keychain Remotes
1x Smoke Detector
While the system is completely DIY, you will find a card that instructs you to call their toll free number to have a representative guide you through the setup if needed.
The first part of setting up your system will be to attach the emergency battery to your control panel. This will ensure that even if power is cut, your control panel will still remained powered and responsive. Next you will plug your control panel into the wall and move on to install the rest of your sensors.
Because everything besides the control panel is completely wireless, setting up the rest of your sensors and detectors is an absolute breeze. Simply remove the film from the rear of your sensor to reveal adhesive, press it to your wall/door, and they will automatically connect to your main control panel.
And finally, to activate your keychain sensors, press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously and within a few seconds they will sync to your control panel.
As you can see, the setup of Protect America is shockingly easy. The days of hours upon hours of hole drilling and wire running for home security installation are behind us, and not a moment too soon.
One of the biggest features that attracts customers to Protect America is their zero equipment and setup cost. One of the ways they are able to offer such a low price is by outsourcing their monitoring to another company that specializes in monitoring for many other security companies. If you’re looking for a smaller company that understands your specific situation and knows you as a client, Protect America might not be the best choice for you.Protect America incudes all equipment free of charge in all their monthly packages, and the equipment you will receive is notably high quality. All equipment is manufactured by General Electric company, a name we all know and trust; another key feature in Protect America's systems.
Along with receiving high quality equipment free of cost, in the unlikely event that any of the equipment you receive is faulty or malfunctions, Protect America is one of the few home security providers that offer a lifetime warranty on all their equipment. That means if any piece of equipment ever fails you, all you have to do is call up their customer care center and they will provide you with a replacement completely free of charge. Now that's security you can rely on.
The flexibility of the equipment packages that Protect America offers is another highlight of their service. No matter how many sensors or pieces of equipment you may need, Protect America has a plan to keep you protected. If you need to upgrade beyond what's included in your plan, simply give Protect America a call, upgrade your monthly plan, and you will have the new sensors on your doorstep within a matter of days.
Protect America's home security systems offer a wide variety of monitoring options. For the more budget conscious, Protect America offers the tried and true system of telephone landline protection in their introductory package of $19.99. This offers a standard level of protection, but still leaves you susceptible to intruders cutting your telephone line before a signal is sent out. For an extra layer of protection and security, Protect America offers broadband and cellular monitoring. Broadband moves at least four times faster than a standard telephone line when delivering the alert signal to Protect America's response center, but is still open to burglars cutting your broadband lines. For the highest level of security, you are going to want to go with cellular monitoring, which is completely wireless and thus leaves intruders nothing to destroy in order to prevent a distress signal from being sent.
Protect America is also on the cutting edge of remote control technologies. Offered in all of their broadband and cellular packages is a system they call "SMART Connect." This enables you to control just about every aspect of your system from anywhere with your smartphone and an Internet connection. Many other alarm companies only include this service in their most premium packages, while Protect America includes it in every package that allows the technology. It is important to note that this type of control is only available on systems with either broadband or cellular monitoring, as standard telephone lines simply are not capable of enabling this type of remote control.
Our experience with Protect America is just what we'd expect from a business with an A- from the Better Business Bureau. To get started, they offered a wide variety of standard packages to suit all types of homeowners. And as promised, there were absolutely no equipment fees or upfront costs outside of the monthly fee. One downside to this, though, is that this only applies to "qualified customers" and they do require a 36-month contract. This means they do run a credit check before you sign up, and you will be signed to 3 years of service after your initial 14 day risk free trial.
Setup was as easy as we imagined, and we had our system set up within 20 minutes. And when they say do it yourself, they really mean it. As promised, absolutely no tools or prior experience were required and it was literally so easy to set up that a 12 year old could do it. Not that we'd recommend that, but it's nice to know how Protect America puts user friendliness and accessibility so high on their list of priorities.
