Detailed Review

One of the most popular trends in the industry is now do-it-yourself installations. However, some homeowners would rather see their systems installed by a professional. There are still companies out there that provide complete service for all your home protection needs and one of the most recognizable of these companies in the world of home protection is ADT.

This is a company that we have extensive personal experience with. It's also a company that we are happy to review as it is one of the best all-around, regardless of what your needs are.

Key Features & Technology

One of the biggest benefits associated with the ADT system is the wide array of components and monitoring options. Six different types of features set the ADT security system apart from the competition.

These options include remote arming and disarming of the system, controlling thermostats, locking doors, access to live video, turning on and off lights, and setting up different types of modes—ranging from vacation to sleeping. While they aren't the only company that has these products, they offer them all in simple, easy-to-understand monitoring packages.

These features aren't all that ADT offers its new customers. One feature that we enjoy is their new garage door controller. From anywhere in the world, you can open and close your garage door, as well as be alerted to any activity. This feature can also be aligned with their state of the art ADT Pulse Technology.

Depending on which ADT security package you get for your home you may need to have a landline installed. The basic package requires a landline connection, while the three other packages all work using a cellular connection.

In addition, when it comes to remotely accessing your ADT home security system, you can do so from the comfort of your cell phone. There are also remote controls that include a panic button, arming and disarming of the system, recessed buttons that prevent accidental activation, and the ability to activate the panic alarm by pressing both top buttons at the same time.

Installation

ADT systems are fully installed by their trained professionals, leaving little to worry about on your end. With the newest advancements in the do-it-yourself security business, this is something that many companies other than ADT are trying to rid themselves of.

Not only will the installation of your purchase be completed by a trained professional, you'll also have the chance to ask important questions about your new system. Installation dates can be determined as soon as your order and in some cases same day installation is possible. Your technician will also install the key components including keypad, motion detectors, and entryway detectors.

Packages

Basic

ADT's Basic package comes with 24/7 monitoring of the most vital parts of your home's well-being. The monitoring includes basic home security over a landline connection, a medical pendant, and smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring. The installation fee is $99 for this and all other packages.

Basic + Wireless Connect

The Basic + Wireless connect package comes with all of the same features as the basic package, but the security system stays in touch with ADT using cellular signals, rather than a landline. This is important since a landline can be disabled during severe weather, emergencies, and by manual tampering. This package also comes with a lifetime equipment warranty and a $99 installation fee.

ADT Pulse + Video

The ADT Pulse + Video package offers cutting-edge home security capabilities to customers at a competitive price. This package includes the cellular-based, 24/7 monitoring of the previous package, plus it also comes with video monitoring. Just as importantly, customers paying for this package have access to ADT's smartphone app—allowing them to monitor their home's live video feed in real-time.

ADT Pulse + Smart Home Connect

ADT's most expensive offering comes with all of the same features as the previous plan, including 24/7 cellular monitoring, video capabilities, and a smartphone application. In addition, Smart Home Connect customers can also connect their ADT home security system into their larger smart home network, a must-have for those with existing smart technology.

Our Experience

From day one, when my family decided to join with ADT for our home security, I have been impressed. Their customer service representative was incredibly helpful when I called to inquire about pricing. The agent wasn't pushy about making me purchase a system and that made me feel comfortable enough to order a Home Automation system with ADT Pulse Technology.

In addition, the install technician hooked the system up quickly and answered all my questions. My favorite feature is the addition of the garage door controller. As someone who has left their door open many times in the past, this was a useful bonus for me.

However, there have been some times that customer service has not been what I expected. There have been times when I would call and just get transferred from one agent to another as they attempted to figure out the problems with my sensors, with no satisfactory conclusion. Customer service is something that they have been hit or miss on, so just hope it isn't anything crucial if you do need to call.

I’ve had ADT for 4mos. I’ve had no problems with the equipment. I had to call them back after the initial install to correctly label the sensors. The rep who came was very helpful and accommodating. My ADT system gives me piece of mine.
If my goes off, they are quickly responsive. Once it went off because I forgot it was on and walked out the door without turning it off. I left the door ajar while on the back of my house. The next thing I knew a cop was approaching me. He had received the alarm that the back door sensor was not cleared. The cop had checked my entire house inside before realizing I was on the back of the house. I felt the ADT system worked. My only concern is the cost of the equipment. But it is transferable if you move.

Signed with ADT in 2011 with land line. ADT did not like my switch to VOIP and put in cellular link. Persistent communication failures started in 2014. Repeated service calls failed to correct. Cellular contact finally failed in whole area, Cancelled all service with ADT 12/14, Service very slow (2-3 week wait) and costly
